The volunteers and staff of the National Runaway Switchboard (NRS) are deeply saddened that a teen in Pennsylvania was killed when her friends thought she might reveal their plan to run away (Main news, May 22).

The NRS national crisis line receives hundreds of calls every day from teens thinking about running away, who already have run away and teens concerned about friends. Confidentially and safely, we assist teens in getting help for themselves or others.

Running away doesn’t solve problems, nor does violence. The NRS encourages youth and families to use community resources for support and guidance. Our national database of resources is commonly used to prevent crisis and tragedy in commun-ities across the country.

Teens and parents who need help can call the NRS at 1-800-621-4000, 24 hours a day. Teens who fear their friends are considering violence toward themselves or others should call their local police immediately.
