Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...
OK, so it’s not the Indy 500, but it’s as close as we’ll probably ever get in the Chicago area. Route 66 Raceway kicks off its inaugural season with a smattering of exciting events that start at 9:30 a.m. Friday and run through the last race at 6 p.m. Sunday. The Route 66 Nationals, the first National Hot Rod Association race to be held in the area, features drivers from all five professional categories: top fuel, funny car, pro stock, pro stock motorcycle and pro stock truck. A big highlight of the weekend should be an appearance by Cory McClenathan, driver of the McDonald’s dragster. The fun is at Route 66 Raceway, 3200 S. Chicago St., Joliet. 815-722-5500.
