I took strong exception to Steve Chapman’s column on Indonesia (Op-Ed, May 24). He wrote that “they (the Indonesian people) stood up on their hind legs and forced him (Suharto) to quit.”

Isn’t the phrase “to stand up on one’s hind legs” used to refer to animals, not humans? Are Indonesians not human beings too? Why, then, does Mr. Chapman refer to them in this manner? I found Mr. Chapman’s commentary to be highly offensive and condescending, not only toward Indonesians but toward all of us who walk on two feet and not four.
