Within five years, Michael Jordan will have retired, the Bears and the Blackhawks will still be rebuilding and the White Sox will have moved to Charlotte/Salt Lake City/Havana/St. Petersburg/wherever dumb taxpayers can be found to build Big Jerry another stadium.
Kerry Wood will be the new king of Chicago sports, if he hasn’t left town. Cubs fans have suffered long enough. Ninety years (1908-98) is long enough to wander in the desert of futility. They should demand that Andy MacPhail open the checkbook. Sign Wood to a 10-year contract right now. Get Mike Piazza, Robin Ventura–whoever it takes to help win the pennant this year.
If he’s not going to spend the money, admit it now. Let Wood go to a team that cares about winning. If he leaves, I’m rooting for whoever signs him. I hope it’s not the Yankees or Mets.
Let’s not have another Greg Maddux, Lou Brock, Bill Madlock, Fergie Jenkins, Joe Carter or Lee Smith by letting King Kerry get away.
