Michael Wilmington’s breakdown of a movie critique was enlightening but his example movie doesn’t measure up to the standards.
Just look at the writing. A well written movie has fleshed-out characters, strong structure and interesting dialogue. “L.A. Confidential” lacked all three. Guy Pearce’s “by the book” cop who learns to respect the methods of the “rough cop” was a cliche.
The structure was often weak, building up and then going nowhere. Too many examples to mention.
I can’t believe I’m the only person who thinks this movie was mediocre.
