Barnard W. Wingate, 75, of Des Plaines, a World War II veteran and an electrical engineer, died Saturday in Vencor Hospital in Northlake.
Born in Miakka, Fla., Mr. Wingate moved to Chicago to attend Coyne Electrical School after he graduated from high school. After he completed the course, Mr. Wingate was drafted to serve in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was stationed in the United States and discharged in 1944.
He then attended Tri-State College in Angola, Ind., where he received his degree in electrical engineering. His first job took him to Minneapolis, where he met his wife, Ailorae Wingate.
He and his family moved to Springfield, Ill., where he worked as plant engineer for Pillsbury Corp. In 1974, Mr. Wingate accepted an engineering position with Tenneco Packaging Corp. of America in Evanston. He retired in 1981.
“He was a very honest and wise man,” said his wife of 45 years.
Other survivors include three sons, Tim, Mark and Todd; a daughter, Lynne; a brother, Reggie; and five grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in Oehler Funeral Home, 555 Lee St., Des Plaines, and from 10 a.m. Thursday until 11 a.m., the time of services in the Evangelical Free Church of Des Plaines, 55 W. Golf Rd., Des Plaines.
