Bob Greene has devoted thousands of words in recent years to the plight of abused and abandoned children. His reportage of the “Baby Richard” case brought him accolades and criticism for the depth and large number of stories. His critics claimed he was fixated, and his supporters felt he was a champion.
After reading Greene’s May 24 column (Main news), there should be no doubt that his writing is vital in keeping these atrocities before the public and the government agencies that should be held accountable.
His account of police finding a 2 1/2-year-old child locked in the trunk of his mother’s car because she couldn’t find a baby-sitter is typical of his gut-wrenching campaign to make sure that no child’s life should pass as unimportant.
To Greene’s critics I say it’s time to find something legitimate to beef about. If more journalists like Greene got involved in their stories, maybe society could realize positive closure on an issue like child endangerment.
