A program that will extend recreational programs after school and on weekends in Wheeling School District 21 will be closely studied by other school districts, state Rep. Lauren Beth Gash (R-60th) predicts.

District officials confirmed Monday that they will receive a $100,000 state grant to fund the one-year pilot programs in London and Holmes Middle Schools, starting in September.

Gash praised Wheeling Village President Greg Klatecki and Plan Commission member Thomas Van Zeyl for lobbying of state legislators in February on behalf of the program.

“The program focuses on kids at risk–latchkey kids and children who have nowhere to go,” said District 21 Board President Arlen Gould.
