UniView Technologies Corp. shares surged 38 percent Thursday after the unprofitable developer of TV set-top boxes and other interactive products said it is working with Lucent Technologies Inc. on an Internet phone.

Dallas-based UniView, formerly Curtis Mathes Holding Corp., rose 75 cents, to $2.72, in trading of 4.37 million shares, more than 16 times its three-month average.

UniView and Lucent, the biggest U.S. phone-equipment maker, are developing technology for an all-in-one Internet phone that lets people surf the Web and check e-mail while they talk with another person.

UniView is hoping to cash in on consumer interest in Web-related appliances after years of widening losses from its interactive TVs and other ventures.

UniView and Murray Hill, N.J.-based Lucent agreed in March to collaborate on projects that use UniView’s hardware and software.

The companies will probably license the technology to others to make the equipment, said Reba Reid, a UniView spokeswoman.
