In evaluating the functions of the current dispatch center and how it will integrate into the new Public Safety Building, the village staff evaluated the cost, efficiency and service offered by joining a multi-agency dispatch center. The Village of Barrington has a unique opportunity to improve fire and police service and obtain a modern state-of-the-art dispatch center at substantial savings.

Many local fire and police departments have changed from providing their own dispatch service to joining with other communities to form intergovernmental agencies for combined dispatch. This has proven to be efficient and has reduced the operational cost of dispatch. The service levels have been enhanced by increasing the number of operators on duty at any time to handle emergency calls. Costs are substantially reduced because the operational and capital equipment dollars are spread among governmental bodies.

Village staff members estimate that the need for additional personnel to staff a dispatch center and cover a reception desk in the new Public Safety Building will add approximately $282,000 to the operating budget. By joining QuadCom, a local multi-agency dispatch center, and retaining the current dispatch personnel to staff the records section of the police department, the residents will enjoy the same personal service currently provided in the Public Safety Building and gain all of the financial and operational benefits that come with a modern professional dispatch center.

As a trustee, my responsibility is to provide the highest level of health, safety and welfare that we can afford for the residents of the Village of Barrington. It is evident that by joining a multi-agency dispatch center we will be meeting that mandate and at the same time avoid a substantial increase in the operational budget. In addition, every effort is being made to retain those employees in other positions within the village.
