Joan Beck is absolutely right: Free speech should be universal (“Not-so-free speech,” Op-Ed, June 4). Protest if you don’t like someone else’s message, as long as the protest doesn’t include threats. Gay people endure threats in the form of protests and are threatened with losing their jobs, apartments and homes, access to medical care, financial resources and even their lives. The nuances of “love the sinner, hate the sin” usually are lost on the crowbar-wielding 17-year-old. Having said that, I don’t approve of the pendulum swinging too far in the other direction either. The only acceptable way to fix the problem is to not create another one in the process.
