I object to Bob Greene’s June 2 column (Tempo) in which he wrote of his repulsion at seeing the emergence of 13-year cicadas in Memphis.
As a devoted friend of the cicada species I was quite upset by this. Mr. Greene should be honoring Brother Cicada, not despising him! Isn’t it enough that we’ve destroyed so much of the world’s open land? Do we now have to turn our vicious impulses against the simple cicada, who blesses us with his songs and only wants to reproduce?
I feel sorry for Mr. Greene, who lives in a neomedieval, shadow-filled thought world. But I would also like to see him removed as a columnist.
