When I read about the Homewood boy’s alleged murder plot (Page 1, May 28), I was, as many other people, deeply saddened that this sort of thing exists in our schools. Yes, the boy is “accountable for what he says,” as expressed by one of the girls’ mothers. And by the same token, our children need to be accountable for the way they treat each other. The article states that the boy had in some way been mistreated by this group of girls. I do not know the details of this situation, and I would never condone his solution to his problem. But kids need to be taught to respect each other, and that boy should have had a person to go to with his problems.
Too often schools ignore the teasing and taunting and end up punishing the child who strikes back at this abuse. The intolerance of others should not be tolerated. There should be a zero-tolerance policy against teasing and ridicule.
