Revised plans for the proposed Pine Park, without skate boarding and dog-training areas, received a much warmer welcome from Hoffman Estates Park District residents Monday night.
Instead, a skateboarding park would be created at either South Ridge Park or the Willow Recreation Center, under the revised plans. Park officials also said they are considering building an outdoor dog-training site at the recreation center, along Algonquin Road.
Park District plans for Pine Park, to be developed at Winston Drive and Charleston Lane, include a practice soccer field, all-turf baseball field, walking path around the park connecting to Algonquin Road, a tot lot, roller- and ice-hockey area, ice-skating area, sled hill, sand volleyball court and mountain-bike path.
Residents had expressed strong reservations about the plans for the skateboarding and dog-training areas. Monday night, they said they supported a second area for in-line and ice-skating and asked that the sledding hill be much higher than the 12-foot slope now proposed.
“Junior high kids won’t get to (skate) if there are older kids in the rink,” said Micky Olszewski in requesting a second skating area.
The Park District is working to meet a June 30 deadline for applying for a 50-50 matching grant from the Illinois Land Water Conservation Fund to develop the park. The grant could reimburse the district up to $200,000 of the $418,500 plan.
The district’s Building and Grounds Committee, which tabled discussion on Pine Park last week, is scheduled to take up the matter again at 7 p.m. Thursday.
