Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

I am ashamed of the Tribune’s excessive coverage of the Year 2000 problem. People with no prior knowledge of the problem would be given the impression that Jan. 1, 2000, will be a doomsday for the world economy.

To be honest, that might be so; however, your article’s presence in the Business section would frighten anyone who owns stocks. A friend of mine has already told me he plans to be out of the market by this time next year; if everyone took that approach, the crash in 1987 would look mild by comparison!

What we need are for business leaders to recognize the problem and to devote all necessary resources to it. Delay new product shipments if necessary, because if there are problems in 2000, your customers will find other suppliers for your products. Anyone with knowledge of computer programming should go out of his or her way to help local small businesses in their spare time.

If we all use our talents, we can make Jan. 1, 2000, just another day.
