Reacting to recent incidents of school violence across the nation, Wausau educators said Tuesday that they are developing a computer bulletin board to track pupils with potential problems.
“It is a real watchdog kind of thing for a kid that is on that list,” said Dave Damgaard, director of pupil services for the Wausau School District. “We are going to try and intervene before things get out of hand.”
The list initially will contain names of pupils found delinquent in court more than once and considered “serious habitual offenders,” he said. Damgaard also proposes that teachers submit a list of pupils unhappy with school or their lives because “we have to take seriously what kids say.”
The school board was told Monday that a planning group that includes law enforcement is developing the bulletin board as a way to keep authorities informed about student troubles. For example, if a pupil is arrested with a weapon, off school grounds, school officials would know about it the next morning through the computer, Damgaard said.
