The story on selection of a new president for Chicago State (Main news, May 30) said the new president would be charged with finding money to continue programs in the face of state budget cuts.
But there have been no state budget cuts for Illinois higher education. To the contrary, Gov. Jim Edgar and members of the General Assembly have provided additional funds for higher education for a number of years now. Providing funds for quality higher education in Illinois has been an important priority for them. In the recently concluded legislative session, for example, the new state budget provides an increase in operations and grant funding of 7.1 percent over the current year’s funding. Those of us who are involved in higher education are most appreciative of this generous support.
