I would love to shop for antiques in downtown Evanston and eat at ethnic restaurants before and after. But that is not what is being proposed for the Research Park site–a mega-cineplex and mall are. Your June 8 editorial all too facilely overlooked the important specific issues involved: the dubious finances, the threat to the existing commercial district, the inadequate provision for parking and traffic and the general disregard by Evanston officials for the discontent of many citizens with the project as conceived.
I agree with your observation that Evanston is surrounded by cineplexes and malls. But my conclusion (unlike yours) is that we don’t need another one!
