Donald A. Hess, 82, a 20-year resident of Mesa, Ariz., formerly of St. Charles, Arlington Heights and North Dakota, died Tuesday in Valley Lutheran Hospital in Mesa. Born in Van Buren, Ohio, Mr. Hess attended Montana State Business College and graduated with a degree in public relations from Michigan State University after two years. He was managing director of the Chamber of Commerce in Devils Lake, N.D., and formerly of the St. Charles and Arlington Heights chambers from 1957 to 1964. For 13 years, Mr. Hess was a bartender for the Des Plaines Elks Club. He was a 48-year member of the Masonic Lodge and was active at the Apache Wells Community Church in Mesa and the Apache Wells retirement community. Survivors include two sons, Martin and Gerald; a daughter, Susan Krueger; a sister; 13 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Nov. 20 in Mesa.
