Fashion designers often take their cues from films. A few were ahead of the game with “Titanic.”

So, from the fall 1998 runways, here’s a heads-up for eveningwear.

The style of dress is Edwardian (1890s to 1910 or so). For women, that era was a liberating time, in work and in fashion. No one style dominated, but it was a period of contrasting choices: high-collared dresses and plunging necklines — strong emphasis on the bosom either way. Dresses with bustles rivaled slimmer, one-piece gowns. The corset was in and out.

A few ideas to get you started: Think about long gloves with a long evening dress. A small beaded or fringed handbag. Chokers and pendant earrings and necklaces. Hair pinned up and adorned with trinkets. You get the picture.
