Thank you, Joanne Trestrail, for an excellent job of expressing your viewpoint (“In praise of bad art,” May 31).
Someone quotable once said, “There are participants in life and there are observers of life.” Your article illustrated the view from the participants’ venue; perhaps someone as eloquent will be able to speak for the others.
I love to ride and be around horses. While not involved with actual showing, my greatest enjoyment comes from starting the new colts and teaching them to trust humans. One of the best parts of this as a hobby is that I can/cannot be reached depending on whether I choose to take the cell phone with me. Being “off” from the human rat race is very comforting and leaves me refreshed and ready to return to the frantic pace of my hospital job.
My husband also works with animals as a hobby, in his case, canines. And we have friends who use their non-work time to engage in barbershop singing, folk dancing, cycling, motocross racing, amateur productions, bird watching and numerous other sports/hobbies that they find to be satisfying.
Thank you for articulating the viewpoint of those who enjoy participating in life.
