The University of Michigan’s prestigious master’s degree program seriously underrepresents women, with 76 percent of its graduating class being males.

This is in contrast to the medical and law schools, where more than 40 percent of students are women.

“What’s even more disturbing is that 40 percent of our undergraduates in business school are women,” said Jeanne Wilt, director of placement for the school of business.

To answer that question, the university’s business school has started the most intensive study undertaken to learn the strengths and weaknesses of the master of business administration degree.

The $260,000 study involves 10 universities and 13 corporations along with the Center for the Education of Women at the University of Michigan.

The researchers will send out a survey to MBA graduates this summer, tabulate results this fall, conduct focus groups and meet with corporation representatives before writing a final report scheduled to be published next spring.
