Indian police said Tuesday that they have arrested three men for attempting to smuggle uranium from the country’s eastern state of West Bengal into neighboring Pakistan.

“We suspect they are members of a bigger international gang that has been operating in this area for smuggling drugs, uranium and other things,” said Jayanta Basu, a police official in the town of Asansol.

All three men are Indian nationals.

Police arrested Maheshwar Singh Deo near Asansol, 156 miles west of Calcutta, on Sunday for carrying more than 2 pounds of uranium and three-quarters of a pound of heroin.

Basu said information the police received from Deo prompted them to conduct raids in his native town of nearby Raghunathpur, leading them to arrest two accomplices.
