A day after peace talks collapsed, mutinous soldiers in the West African nation of Guinea-Bissau launched an artillery strike Friday on the country’s battered capital, Senegalese authorities said in Mpak, Senegal.
A billowing cloud of black smoke was seen from the northern side of the capital, Bissau, said a Senegalese military commander. There were no immediate reports of casualties.
Brig. Anumane Mane, Guinea-Bissau’s former army chief of staff, attempted a coup June 7, accusing President Joao Bernardo Vieira of corruption, but the bid failed. Mane’s forces were pinned down near Bissau, but they are now on the run.
