GILLEY’S GAME
Homewood-Flossmoor’s Emily Gilley won her second straight state golf championship and led H-F to the team title with a record low total 143. She broke the state meet record she shared with Belleville Althoff’s Jill Gomric by four strokes.
CAREER CATCH
R.J. Luke of Waubonsie Valley became the state’s career leader in receptions and receiving yards when he caught eight passes for 106 yards in a 23-14 victory over Lake Park. He finished with 196 receptions for 3,124 yards. He set a third state record, going 40 consecutive games with a reception.
REDEEMING VALUE
Motivated by their false start disqualification in 1997, which cost them a shot at the state championship, Oak Park’s Huskies set a state-meet record in the 400 freestyle relay. The Huskies, who finished in 3:06.19, also won their first state swimming title.
ALL-AROUND STAR
After scoring a record 39.175 in all-around at the state meet, Fremd gymnast MaryAnne Kelley also set state standards in winning vault and uneven parallel bars–scoring 9.85 in both.
RAMBLING ON
Defending Class AA girls basketball champ Loyola set the state record for most victories in a season with 36 when it beat East St. Louis Lincoln for the title.
SHUTOUT CLOUT
Maine South goalkeeper Alice Gleason broke the state soccer record of 55 career shutouts in a 9-0 victory over Niles West. By season’s end, Gleason had 65 career shutouts.
SMASH HITS
Oak Park’s Tom Trantow shattered the state volleyball record of 763 kills set by Dan Schultz of Oak Park during 1993-94 and finished with 1,197. In softball, Barrington catcher Christine Lindberg set state records for doubles in a season (21) and career (50).
MADE OF STEELE
Pitching ace Stefanie Steele of Morris finished the softball season with a 43-2 record, surpassing the record of 31 victories set by erin Reiter of Lemont in 1989.
