School’s out! School’s out!
No it’s not! No it’s not!
College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn expects about 1,700 high school students at its summer school program this year.
The program is for students who need to repeat courses they failed during the regular academic year at their home high schools as well as for those who want to get a course or two out of the way before next year. The cost is $179 per course.
Carl Heine, manager of the Center for Youth Education at the college, shared some other facts about high school summer school offerings and enrollment:
– About 70 courses will be available this summer.
– Each course covers one semester of high school credit.
– The courses meet for 3 1/2 hours a day for 18 days.
– Students may complete four courses per summer: one morning and one afternoon course in each of the two summer sessions.
– Of those who attend, about 90 percent pass their courses.
– Students have come not only from DuPage County but also, for various reasons, from New York, Michigan and Virginia and from Switzerland and China.
– High school students experience more freedom on the COD campus than they might at their home high schools. No one roams the halls handing out detentions. Watch out, however. Too many absences means that the home high school will not accept the credits.
– Although there is less structure imposed on students, there are very few discipline problems.
– Enrollment continues to grow. Now entering its sixth year, in the past five years a total of 3,500 students have attended the program.
