The peak season for mangoes parallels our own warm weather months, June through September. But if Midwestern summers can’t be depended on for balmy weather, let the tropical, sassy-sweet flavor of mangos offer some compensation. Their juicy flesh and flowery aroma are seductive; their versatility is appealing. Mangoes can add tropical sparkle to smoothies, relishes, salads and desserts. Buy mangoes that are heavy for their size, and firm but not rock-hard-like avocadoes, you want a little give when you press them. (They can also be ripened at home in a paper bag.)
