Joseph Margolin, 54, died Sunday at his home in Zion. Mr. Margolin was a substance-abuse counselor for the Gateway Foundation in Lake Villa. In his younger days, he was a jazz drummer who played in a trio on Rush Street. He was a U.S. Army cook and served in Italy for two years. Margolin grew up in Chicago and attended Roosevelt University. He was an avid reader, fisherman and had a passion for writing. He is survived by his wife, Mary; two daughters, Kelly and Stacy; and a sister, Allene. A graveside funeral service will begin at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Shalom Memorial Park, 1700 W. Rand Rd. in Arlington Heights.
