It hardly takes much investigation to figure out what caused the June 18 South Shore rail crash: lack of common sense. You don’t stop a vehicle across a set of railroad tracks, whether the crossing gates are up or down.
I want to thank the Tribune for noting the questionable records both of the truck driver and of his company, but I wish that you also had emphasized how unusual commuter rail accidents are. As a fan of mass transit and a South Shore commuter, I am convinced that rail is still safer, more enjoyable and better for the environment and for the city of Chicago than driving.
