John McCarron missed the point. He suggested that HMOs should “get out there and manage care” (“In critical condition: Resuscitating the image of HMOs,” Op-Ed June 22). The duty of an HMO, or any other form of health-care company, is to manage costs. The business people who make management decisions have no expertise, or right, to make decisions regarding care.
The reason doctors don’t like being second-guessed by HMO medical directors is because we recognize they are only motivated by cost, not by providing good medical care. It is these directors, not the doctors, who are greedy.
