Mary Schmich, writing on June 24 about her love of heat and her disdain for air conditioning is obviously in the wrong place at the wrong time. If she seriously enjoys sitting outside in 90 degree heat and 90 percent humidity so be it, but most of us find the very thought intolerable.
The birds, the insects, the whisper of flowers growing– whisper of flowers growing?– indeed. Those are natural life forms that live outside. Air conditioners were invented to condition the air so that it’s fit for human habitation. I’m completely in favor of the Schmich Law banning use of air conditioners at certain hours and temperatures, just as soon as we first pass the Salkover Law banning hot weather.
And we Chicagoans know only too well that those are not B-52s strafing our fair town. Those are mosquitoes, designed and built by the same entity responsible for those birds, insects and flowers that we’re supposed to love so much. Please pass the Cutter, Mary.
