Regarding Sam Kennerly’s June 12 letter, “Pledge problems,” he reveals his bias by insisting on reading into our Pledge of Allegiance a “compelling (of) our citizens to declare their allegiance to . . .God. . . .”

Unless he has a pledge different from the one I have always known, the allegiance we pledge is “to the flag . . . and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God. . . .”

It’s quite a stretch to read that as a pledge to God. Besides, if Mr Kennerly objects to the acknowledgement of God, he is free to simply omit the reference to God from his recitations. But what I believe he is after is the complete omission of any reference to God. What he would do with the Declaration of Independence, God only knows!
