Bernice Ruff, 86, a former city relief worker, died Tuesday in Elmhurst Memorial Hospital of complications following a short illness. Mrs. Ruff worked during the Depression to aid Chicago’s needy–finding them housing, food, jobs, and sometimes even a mattress. Her daughter, Mimi Wolak, said her mother was a well of advice, who never said “I told you so.” Mrs. Ruff’s husband, Stephen, was an attorney who served as president of the West Highland Savings and Loan. In addition to her daughter, Mrs. Ruff is survived by a son, Stephen Jr.; a brother, William; and three grandchildren. Services will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. Thursday in Gibbons Funeral Home, 134 S. York Rd., Elmhurst.
