So now baseball’s OK again. Cool, even. It’s not too old-fashioned or too slow or too boring. The people who play it aren’t the horrible ingrates they used to be, and now everyone is rushing to christen baseball’s renaissance. The idea that baseball matters again started with Mark McGwire and took off from there. It went through Kerry Wood and the New York Yankees, picked up with Sammy Sosa and grabbed ahold of Juan Gonzalez. It figures to stay alive with Greg Maddux and Ivan Rodriguez, and with any luck a decent pennant race will break out in your neighborhood. Baseball is on such a high that it’s hard to conceive that the people running the game could manage to bring it down.
