John W. Madden Sr., 79, a retired Chicago police lieutenant who was awarded a Bronze Star, for his service in World War II, died Thursday in Lakeland Medical Center in St. Joseph, Mich. Mr. Madden retired in 1975 after 29 years with the police, serving as a commanding officer of Brighton Park general assignment unit. In the war, he was the first lieutenant and company commander with the 894th Tank Destroyer Battalion and received the Bronze Star for valor as well as a Purple Heart. The battalion received the Croix de Guerre with Silver Star for helping force the Nazis from Siena. Mr. Madden grew up on Chicago’s South Side. Survivors include his wife, Corinne; a son, John W. Jr.; two sisters, Eileen Page and Kathryn Bingen; a brother, Robert Madden; and five grandchildren. Services were held Saturday.
