Several Wheaton-Warrenville Unit District 200 administrators have been given salary bonuses to reward them for the longer hours they are working this summer to assume the duties of the vacant post of superintendent.

The move represents a savings for the district, because the $10,000 in salary bonuses for July and August is less than half of the monthly pay of former Supt. Jim Travis, whose resignation from his $135,000-a-year position took effect June 30.

Mary Curley, assistant superintendent for instruction, who is doubling this summer as acting superintendent, will receive a $2,500-a-month bonus beginning this month. The bonus, which is on top of her $99,202-a-year salary, likely would be paid for July and August, after which time the board is expected to name an interim superintendent from the ranks of retired superintendents in the area.

Jim Popernik, assistant superintendent for business, whose salary is $96,139, was awarded a one-time bonus of $3,000.
