William D. Reed, 86, co-founder of Chicago’s Star-Tubular Products Co., died Thursday in Naples, Fla. Mr. Reed started the pipe products company in 1948, serving as president and director until his retirement as chairman of the board in 1982. Following a recent merger the company is now known as Star Seminole, said Mr. Reed’s daughter, Kathie Cocks. Mr. Reed and his wife of 61 years, Evelyn, lived for years in LaGrange, where he was a member of the board of LaGrange Memorial Hospital and a parishioner at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. He was also active in the Chicago Yacht Club and the LaGrange Country Club. He retired to Naples in 1990. Mr. Reed was a native of Youngstown, Ohio. In addition to his wife and daughter, Mr. Reed is survived by a son, William, who manages Star Seminole; a daughter, Virginia; a sister. Mary Callahan; and nine grandchildren. A funeral mass will be said Tuesday in Naples.
