The July 12 editorial “Fair play for Peotone” called for an environmental impact statement for a proposed airport at Peotone. It does not require the proverbial rocket scientist to assess how the environment would be impacted by an airport.

Thousands of acres of prime Illinois farmland would be obliterated and replaced with concrete. Polluted air would be the result of fuel emissions from hundreds of airplanes and thousands of automobiles arriving and departing on a daily basis. Nearby residents would scream about jet noise.

Future travel to cities within a 350-mile radius of Chicago will be more efficient and have minimal environmental impact when a high-speed rail system is developed.
