Music critic Greg Kot’s criticism of Mayor Richard M. Daley and his administration’s decision to cancel a proposed Smashing Pumpkins concert in Grant Park is off-key (“Pumpkins answer wishes of charity–and fans,” Tempo, July 9). The concert, as Mr. Kot noted, was rescheduled for July 7 at the New World Music Theatre in Tinley Park.

What Mr. Kot fails to acknowledge is that the Daley administration’s decision to deny the Grant Park concert was based on prudent and wise public safety concerns.

But that is not all that should have earned Mr. Kot’s praise. Had the Daley administration not canceled the Grant Park show, the Make-A-Wish Foundation would not have benefited from the donations generated by the estimated 20,000 people who paid to see the Pumpkins at the World.
