Irene M. Feign, 92, a retired cook and caterer, died Thursday in DuPage Convalescent Center, where she lived. She worked as the cook and housekeeper at St. Bartholomew’s Catholic Church on Chicago’s Northwest Side for 27 years. She also operated her own business, Feign’s Catering, out of her home on the Northwest Side. A Chicago native, Mrs. Feign was the oldest girl in a family of 13 children, and she had to quit school in the 2nd grade to help care for her siblings. After her mother died, Mrs. Feign raised two younger brothers and had five sons of her own. “She was `Mom’ to everybody,” said one of her sons, Ronald. Among family and friends, Mrs. Feign was well-known for her cooking. “When she made chicken soup for the family, everybody would stop by and get a gallon,” Ronald Feign said. She is survived by another son, Roger; 27 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; and at least 10 great-great-grandchildren. Mass will be said at 10 a.m. Monday in St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church, 145 E. Grand Ave., Bensenville.
