The City Council is expected to vote Tuesday on the construction of a 186-foot cellular tower planned for Lippold Park.
On Wednesday, the Zoning Board of Appeals voted 5-1 to recommend approval of a Sprint PCS proposal to erect a cellular tower in the southeast corner of the park near U.S. Highway 14 and Illinois Highway 176.
The Sprint digital cellular phone system will not be available until the company constructs approximately 510 cellular towers in the Chicago area, Sprint spokesman Brian Domingo said. The Crystal Lake site is the farthest-northwest site planned by the company.
If the City Council approves the tower construction, the Park District would receive $1,000 per month for leasing the 30-by-30-foot area to Sprint.
