The funeral of the Romanovs should be put in historical perspective. Economic injustice, vicious pogroms and unchecked police brutality were the hallmarks of Romanov rule. Czarist oppression made the Communist revolution possible.
Ironically, the czarist cruelty, while catastrophic for Russia, enriched the United States. Millions of Americans are here today because their families–Russians, Poles, Jews, Lithuanians, Ukrainians, etc.–fled the tyranny of the Romanovs.
