New Lenox officials agree the Cedar Road bridge just north of U.S. Highway 30 needs renovation, but they are not convinced a plan submitted this week is the solution.

A design submitted by the engineering firm Teng and Associates Inc. of Chicago calls for a wider, higher bridge, Ron Franciskovich, village engineer, told trustees.

“The whole idea is to bring it up to standards,” Franciskovich said.

The bridge would have two northbound lanes, two southbound lanes and a protected left turn lane and would be raised about four feet and moved slightly to the west, according to the plan.

Trustee Dave Batson was concerned that a new bridge might create more flooding problems for the lumber business on the east side of the bridge.

Mayor John Nowakowski said he did not like the proposed alignment, which he said would narrow on an elevated curve.
