Harry Mandel, 97, an early member of the Chicago Federation of Musicians who conducted musical scores at Chicago’s silent movie theaters, died July 10 in St. Francis Hospital in Evanston. A resident of Chicago’s East Rogers Park neighborhood for 55 years, Mr. Mandel maintained a small family business–A.C. Auto Supplies, a tire supply company–from the 1940s until several years ago. Before coming to Chicago, he had joined the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra in the first violin section and later became an assistant concert meister there. Survivors include his daughter, Dolores Seno; two granddaughters; and four great-grandchildren. Services were private.
