“What’s it worth to get Clinton?” the Tribune editorial asks on July 19. The Tribune editorial board decries the ruling by several courts that ordered Secret Service agents to testify in the Monica Lewinsky investigation.
It is highly doubtful, as the White House and other Clinton apologists insist, that the president’s (any president’s, for that matter) safety will be at risk because Secret Service agents must testify against the man they must protect. Anybody who is president will still have agents as close as ever when out in the public. In the White House, in the limousine or other safely enclosed places, the agents still will be in the area just as they always have been. Agents don’t stand next to the president when he is in the White House, but they are around.
What is it worth to “get” President Clinton? It is worth the future of this country. If a president commits crimes and a Secret Service agent sees this, then the agent is obligated to report what he saw for the sake of the office of the presidency and for the people of this country. No matter what the cost!
What is the cost? It equals the value of this country’s soul.
