Morton H. Bernstein, 81, an executive with the B & B Shoe Co. in Chicago for more than 40 years, died Monday in Highland Park Hospital. A native of Chicago, Mr. Bernstein grew up in the Hyde Park neighborhood. He graduated from the University of Chicago in 1939. He joined the Army Air Corps in 1941, serving as a procurer of textiles and silk for parachutes. “He trained in Miami Beach with Clark Gable,” said Mr. Bernstein’s daughter Miriam Steinberg. He became an executive with B & B Shoe Co., which his father, Morris, had founded. The company evolved into a major maker of men’s house slippers. Mr. Bernstein retired in 1991. Mr. Bernstein and his late wife Jean moved to Highland Park in 1968. Survivors include three daughters, Bonnie Levy, Miriam Steinberg and Nancy Goldstein; and seven grandchildren. Services were Wednesday.
