Des Plaines aldermen have voted 7-0 to approve the final plat of a 34-unit single-family-home subdivision at the southeast corner of Touhy Avenue and Maple Street.

The Maple Chase subdivision was the third effort by Rosemont-based Tantillo Homes to develop the site. Two-story homes in the subdivision will sit on lots that will average 7,795 square feet, officials said.

The unanimous City Council vote came despite objections from several landowners with property along Touhy near the development.

Mike Didier, whose family owns lots in the 1700 block of Touhy Avenue, said the family has found it difficult to sell the land because of traffic along the busy road and jet noise from nearby O’Hare International Airport.

“The comprehensive zoning plan says there should be commercial development in this area,” Didier said. “By ignoring the professional consultants, I think you’re doing the city a disservice.”

Ald. Carmen Sarlo said the objections should have been raised earlier in the approval process.

In other action, aldermen voted 6-1 to approve a cable television franchise agreement with TCI that city officials said was “virtually the same” as a pact signed last November with TCI competitor Ameritech New Media.

City Manager Wally Douthwaite said the most significant feature of the new TCI pact negotiated by city officials was a pledge from TCI to provide live operators instead of answering machines for callers to a 24-hour customer service telephone line.
