The Clarendon Hills Village Board has approved an ordinance to crack down on illegally connected sump pumps, which officials believe may be contributing to flooding of basements in some areas.
Jim Sigman, an administrative assistant for the village, said, “The reason for the ordinance is to inspect and make sure sump pumps aren’t discharging into the sanitary sewer system. If they are, it can cause backups and flooding in basements.”
The ordinance requires that homes for sale must be inspected to determine that sump pumps are not illegally connected to the sanitary sewer system.
Sigman said the homeowner and prospective buyer would have to decide who would pay to correct such a problem.
