Jumping rope is rated high as a fat-burning exercise. Ten to 15 minutes several times a week also can improve quickness, agility and balance. But it can be a drag to count revolutions, especially if you’re setting goals of consecutive jumps or certain numbers of normal hops, single-footed hops and arm-crossover steps. Good news from the recent National Sporting Goods Show in Chicago: Nautilus will begin selling an inexpensive jump rope (less than $13 suggested retail, available in sports stores this fall) that has a three-digit counter in one handle. Hold the handle in the right hand for forward skipping and the left hand for backward jumping.
