South Barrington village trustees are criticizing the Klehm Woods residential-commercial development plan as too dense for the 620-acre site.
“It’s far too dense for our neighborhoods. I could never approve it,” Trustee Arun Sobti said at the committee of the whole meeting.
Mesirow-Stein Real Estate Inc. of Chicago wants to build 140 single-family homes on large lots along with 320 detached and attached homes on 460 acres.
An additional 260 “empty-nester” homes–single-story structures on 40,000-square-foot lots–also are proposed for the Klehm nursery property along Illinois Highway 59 north of Illinois Highway 72.
During the meeting, residents were given the opportunity to fill out cards with comments or questions.
Mesirow-Stein attorney Ted Novak, responding to one comment that the village is known for large homes on large lots, said that building only 600 homes on the property would not be economically feasible.
The Klehm Woods plan also calls for a 50-acre commercial district and a 40-acre continuing-care retirement community.
